What is the study of the stars?

What are the differences or overlapping similarities between the ways in which we look at the stars?  Let's begin with some definitions....

Astronomy

This is the scientific study of celestial bodies; that seems straightforward enough.  So, what is science?  Well, that is described as the study of nature, the behaviour of natural things, and the knowledge obtained about them.  I guess that could involve anything from a simple observation to a whole life's work.  And we must all have a bit of a scientist in us somewhere!

Astrology

On to astrology, which is defined as the study of the movement and the relative positions of celestial bodies, being interpreted as influencing human affairs.  This usually includes some form of predictive or divinatory aspect but also includes the study of natural things.  There are many times when astronomy and astrology converge, such as when they're used for time keeping or making up a calendar.

But there are some more additions to the astro family (how nice!)...

Astro Sophy

Now, this one is said to have been developed formerly by Willi Sucher (1902-1985) who founded this 'spiritual science' on the work of Rudolph Steiner.  The 'sophy' part of the word as in 'philosophy' usually refers to the use of reason in seeking truth and knowledge of reality, especially the causes and nature of things and the principles governing existence.  All the big things the stars seem to encourage us to ponder.  But the philosophy of the stars has been around with us for a long, long time indeed.  The ancient ancestors of all peoples seem to have their version of 'astro-philosophers'.

Astro-shamanism

Perhaps this is the most difficult one to describe and there is no dictionary that I know of to turn to.  Shamanic practices are those which seek to commune with the spiritual dimensions.  From the Manchu-Tungus word 'saman' we derive 'one who knows'.  This knowledge is often a result of many years training and a deep understanding is gained through living in close proximity with nature.  Since 'astro' is pertaining to the stars or outer space, then astro-shamanism includes the sky-watchers and sky-walkers.  Now, perhaps we're getting closer to the roots of the tree?  When we begin to study the beauty and light abundantly visible as regions of the cosmos, and begin to experience this wonder fully, we begin to really understand the interconnectivity between the realms.  A multidimensional awareness results from meaningful interactions with the sky, which becomes a source of great knowledge and wisdom.

Being a curious sort of cat, I love to explore and don't like to limit myself too much to any one dimension.  Astronomy, astrology, astrosophy and astroshamanism - they all hold fascination for me.  But none of the definitions have so far mentioned the heart - so I'll mention it now.  The heart is surely the most important thing to get to know as the vehicle for all meaningful journeys.

But what are your thoughts?
