Skywatch August

Bird stars of the summer triangle flying high!

August is the time of year when the Milky Way arches overhead from south to north by mid-evening in the northern hemisphere.  The stars of Vega (the 'swooping eagle'), Cygnus (the celestial swan), and Aquila (the 'flying eagle)' reach their highest place, crossing the meridian around the middle of the night.

Here is a list of some of the astronomical alignments for August 2025...

1st

The Sun reaches the Beehive Cluster signalling a time of joyous celebration and gatherings; sharing of collective wisdom and community spirit.  The Moon reaches first quarter phase today, below the stars of Libra, appearing low in the south for a time. Venus continues the Morning Star apparition, reaching highest altitude in the predawn sky.

6th

The earth reaches the 'cross-quarter' point, mid-way between the June solstice and the September equinox.  This year it's marked by a conjunction of the planets Neptune and Saturn in the constellation Pisces.

9th

Full Moon in Aquarius signalling the part of our yearly journey where the Sun approaches the stars of Leo the Lion.  An auspicious time to make prayers and plans for the future, love for all humanity, for all creation.  May the magic of this time fill our hearts with peace and blessings from the overflowing cup of Aquarius.

12th

The planets Venus and Jupiter meet as "twins" in the constellation Gemini.  A wonderful opportunity to work with the combined positive energies of these 'wandering stars' as they gift us with a time for growth, mutual understanding and restoration to grace.  The Perseids meteor shower reaches peak activity around this time of year as the many bright sparkles appear below the 'W' of the constellation Cassiopeia when the sky is free from clouds and light pollution.

16th

The Moon reaches last quarter phase, appearing near the beautiful Pleiades star cluster late in the evening. Beautiful days everyone!  And sweet dreams...

18th

The Kappa Cygnids meteor shower reaches peak activity, radiating from the wing of Cygnus, the celestial swan.  These are dreamy days and nights for sure, with the stars of our Milky Way galaxy in focus, along with the heliacal rising of our 'sister star' Sirius - a time of gentleness, reflection and potential enlightenment.

23rd

Today is the New Moon in Leo with the Sun and Moon joining forces with the star Regulus at the Heart of the Lion.  Regulus, the Sun, the Moon and the star Sirius at heliacal rising makes this a very special time for aligning with love, peace, freedom and truth as we are 'over-lighted' by the archangelic legions of light and guardians of the Sun, Earth and Sky.

27th

A lunar occultation of the star Spica in Virgo coincides with the approximate timing of the ancient festival of the 'procession of Bas't as the Sun reaches the stars of Leo Minor, the little cat.  Love to all cats and kittens today.  I think it may also be the official time of the 'Cat Nights'  but if anyone has any more information on these timings, I'd love to share!
